Owning every camera from the 10D through to the 50D and the 7D I can only say that the 7D has by far the best image quality of the lot. So the sensor is very much up to snuff for the megapixels. What is different is the tradeoff between tonality, color fidelity and dynamic range which is far more balanced on the Canon sensors than it is on the Nikon/Sony dynamic range monsters - which fail miserably in the other respects...
