Cropping isn't what you wish for, but I don't see it as failure. It's just that you need another step to get to the image you had in mind to watch on pc or print (this is the goal). And just as important is having fun, it's good to question yourself and improve your skills but don't take yourself too seriously.

From what I understand is that cropping is common for birding due to the situation and reach of the lens. Say somebody has a 300mm but actually needed a 400mm viewangle, cropping more or less gives you this.
