New 24-85 vs 16-85

I have a D7000 and really liked the 16-85 as an all-purpose walk around. When I reached into the bag and grabbed the camera that was the lens on it. I now also have a D600 and had to part with my DX lenses and get more FX lenses and got the new 24-85 VR. Really I find them quite similar. All things considered, in affordable Nikon Zoom-land, I see no point in swapping the 16-85 for the 24-85 or any other medium zoom as long as you are committed to the DX format. Are there better lenses, sure, but at what cost in dollars and ounces?
