Beginner's question: opinion on cropping

Getting the composition right when taking the shot is desired, but there is nothing wrong with some adjustments in post processing. I shoot a lot of birds, and it's rare that I get the perfect shot. In addition to not being able to stand in the exact right spot for ideal composition, there are focal length limitations and/or proximity to skittish birds or nests to deal with that usually require cropping.
