Knowing and understanding the differences between camera bodies and models is not brain surgery.
Definitions are and will always be subjective. If you want to know what defines a pro body for Nikon go ask them directly and you will get their answer. If you want Canon's answer then go ask them directly as well. The same applies to any camera manufacturer because they are the ones who set the definition for what they offer in their lines.
As you already know anyone can buy a pro level camera that has the credit or the money. Purchasing a pro level camera does not make you a pro, nor does it insure that your work will improve to a professional level.
I have not been involved in these forums for a long time, and I have also never made any attempt to be popular in my posts. After reading this thread it seems like a lot of Measurebating is going on.
So it brings me to this question that I am sure has been asked before. Are you a Photographer or a Measurebator? Have you learned to exploit all the capabilities that your current camera has?
Last but least,
Hands on and practical experience will teach you more about your camera and any other camera than any forum will.

Jason,
you are not looking far enough into the future. Today there are measurable performance / IQ differences between D4 and for example D5200; as there should be between pro and consumer cameras. What I want to determine is: which features of the pro bodies will persist through time. ISO will improve with technology and eventually we will have consumer level DSLRs with perfectly usable 1,000,000 iso and 1 billion pixels. When that happens the pro DSLRs with 2x as much pixels and ISO will not offer the same IQ advantage as pro DSLRs offer today vs todays consumer models. But, if there still will be consumer and pro lines of bodies what will remain as unsurpassed advantage of pro body?
I am neither a photographer nor a measurebator; I am a bored scientist and an aspiring philosopher.
Well I can believe you are not a photographer but I am having trouble believing you are a bored scientist or an aspiring philosopher. Scientist are know for paying attention to detail which you clearly missed as evidenced by what you missed in my response. You certainly are a measurebator because you appear to be constantly measuring and comparing.
We live in the now, and if you know anything about photography we deal with what we have now and not what we might have later. We have no control over what might come because the companies producing the equipment decide what they want to sell and what they release.
In the answer I gave you above you were already directed to the right people to ask your question, call Nikon, call Canon, call all the other manufacturers who make and sell cameras and you can get their actual answers and then debate it with them. LOL
