You know, I was looking through these posts and thinking to myself, well there is not one of them that I could not perform with my 3 primes (not exactly duplicating the photographer talent of Jim and the others here!) and then it came to me — the reason this zoom would make sense to me: image stabilization.

Some years back I had purchased the 24-70 2.8L for use on my 7D. Nice lens, but none of my shots were as good as my 18-55 2.8IS. Better glass, but no IS. Same thing on the 70-200.

Now, I believed then, and still believe, that part of the reason was a big lens on a big camera. Not only weight, but the longer the lens, the more the front edge of the lens will move with the slightest tremor. And I did not disassemble IEDs in Afghanistan.

Really did not have a shake problem with the 35 or 50 primes on my 7D. But the 100mm macro (160mm in real terms) was a little tough hand held for macros!!!

So far I have not had a stabilization problem down to 1/30 on my XP1, but I just got the 60, and have not shot much with it. This said, I will open my eyes to this new potential with the Fuji zoom!

I think this is why Canon came out with the 70-200 L IS 2.8 and 4.0 and a 100mm L IS Macro.  I HOPE that Fujifilm's upcoming wideangle lens has equally good OIS as well.
