there are TWO major problems:

  • the "stickiness" of these NEW labels - even after I've already read a post, or even a whole thread of messages, it is still marked with its NEW tag !!
  • which leads to a serious issue of HOW to distinguish threads one is interested in while being logged to DPR for a stretch, say an evening, etc.

Same here - in my flat view, every thread is now marked NEW, even if I already read it. I use the white dots, which work fine (they show if there are new messages in a thread; and if you click on them, they take you to first new message). "New" seems utterly pointless.

I'll use the "new" label same way I use "question" and "answered" - ignore it completely.

You have the right idea: if the NEW indicators don't serve a purpose for you, just ignore them. For some of us, they are like an old friend who has returned. They are an indicator of what has transpired in the hours/days since we last looked at dpreview. For the way I work, they are a big help. And, agreeing with your comments, I don't see how they harm anybody since they can just be ignored.

It is exactly because we had so many request for their return that we brought them back. To clarify - the white dots show you whether you've read all or some of the posts in a thread, whereas the 'NEW' icon shows threads with recent activity since your session started, irrespective of whether you've visited them or not. Note that we removed this since it's kind of redundant (the indexes are sorted by date of most recent post), but a lot of people missed it so we brought it back.
