You aren't reading it literally enough: the OP meant an hypothetical brand called "Canikon", not Canon and Nikon separately. And the name does have negative connotations, given that it's a popular monicker among Canon & Nikon's detractors---it'd be like Microsoft renaming itself Micro$oft and using that branding on its future products.
