Try restoring to a SSD, or a different sized disc - your 'foolproof' method may prove to be not so foolproof.

I think we are talking about 2 different topics - image backups/restores and recovery partitions.

Image backups/restores (in my case using Acronis)

I have successfully restored backups to different sized discs repeatedly without an issue. I have restored from a 360GB to a 500 GB, from a 500 GB to a 750 GB and to a 1 TB drive. I have done this repeatedly without an issue. And, yes, I have restored to a smaller disc as well provided, of course, that there was sufficient space on the new disc for the backup to be restored.

Recovery Partitions

I have also restored from recovery partitions that were themselves restored from an image backup to a different sized disc without an issue. That is, I have restored an image backup from a smaller disc to a larger disc and then done a recovery restore from that restored image. No problem.

SSD

I have not done this with an SSD for the simple reason that I don't yet have an SSD. I have recently thought about using an SSD and that is why I was posting in this thread. I have no experience doing this with an SSD but, it seems to me, the process ought to be the same provided the software considers the two discs, hd and ssd, to be equivalent.

By the way, I don't think I ever used the term "foolproof" in my posts. In my experience nothing is "foolproof" although some processes work reasonably well. I have probably done between 20 and 40 image restores from backups using Acronis, perhaps more, and I have not had much of a problem. It is why I stopped using Ghost and started using Acronis and it is why I have licensed versions of Acronis all the way back to TrueImage 10.
