So... if Nikon is this horribly negligent, and if we keep rewarding them by buying tons and tons of cameras, what does that say about us? If we really feel Nikon is that terrible, wouldn't the responsible thing to do, in order to save the photographic world from this travesty, to vote with our wallets and go and support an angelicly wholesome camera manufacturer like... Pentax? Olympus?

But perhaps the reason we don't do that is that things aren't as bad as we like to paint them in this stirred glass of water we like to swim in.

And maybe Nikon isn't as evil as we'd like to think, and maybe this problem doesn't have a simple source or root cause because maybe patterns aren't as clearly discernible (some corner pattern, others no corner pattern; some "oil", others not oil) as some of us would like to believe nor evidence as incontrovertible (is it really oil if (a) it doesn't look like it and (b) it moves around with a blower?).

I wish Nikon were a bit more public, too. I'm just not sure that would help allay all the panic around here.
