If you could use a lower ratio then it would be possible. For example Nikon and Canon 70-200 lenses do not extend.

Might just get away with 70-200.

Do you know of any 55 - 200 that don't extend as I can manage with that range.

I have used the Canon 70-200 f2.8 IS and it was nice optically.  The Nikon 70-200vr is also entirely internal.   Zoom, focus, does not cause the lens to extend even 1mm.

Pretty sure the cheaper 70-200 f/4 is the same.
