It's not just a question of saving money or making the lens "easier" to design. optical correction requires more elements, which increases size and complexity. Each new element adds it's own potential for flare and aberrations, too.  When you look at the size of the 35-100, you can see the advantages of software correction. A fully optically corrected f/2.8 lens of this range would be considerably larger.
