Re: It was with a strap attached to the tripod mount, right ?

There are few examples of "zero risk" in the entire universe,  Many many many many people use a rapid strap or something like it.  Nikon says a lot of things that are utter BS in order to make their lives easier, like the wet sensor clean warranty garbage.  Using a strap like this is someing akin to carrying a tripod over your shoulder with a camera and lens on it, everyone does it except for a few cowards.  Flat out it is stupid to be afraid of sling straps because a few outliers (i.e.  one poster with obvious impact damage in the same region).  It's totally bogus, and probably a form of trolling.  This is textbook message board hysteria.

A word of caution about shoulder straps with the D 800. I have used a strap many times on my D 700 with no problem but after three outings with the D 800 and the body opened as shown in the photo below.

I remember your post . A key point was that the tripod mount is not designed to be used to hold a camera at the end of a shoulder strap. But there should be no problem for a strap attached to the eyelets for shoulder straps.

Nikon in Melville says I impacted the camera and I claim that the shoulder strap caused the problem. They also say it cannot be repaired. I have meet with a Nikon field rep who informed me that he has knowledge of similar damage and that he too is surprised that it cannot be repaired. Letters to the Senior G M Customer Service have not produced a response

Yes, I share your pain. It brings two other key points here.

  • Damage the camera by using a strap attached to the tripod mount and you're footing the bill for the repair: this is not to be fixed by Nikon under warranty
  • The damage may be such that the camera cannot be fixed at all

It's a very small risk (many have used a black rapid strap without problem) but not a "zero" risk so IMO why take the chance when there are other options just as efficient and without the risks (YMMV)?

I hope you'll find a solution to your problem. Have you tried a service center other than Nikon's ? At least they could tell you in detail why the camera is not fixable, or maybe confirm that it can be fixed, even if they can't do it themselves.
