Some of us think it's not broken, and it didn't work right a moment earlier.

there are TWO major problems:

  • the "stickiness" of these NEW labels - even after I've already read a post, or even a whole thread of messages, it is still marked with its NEW tag !!
  • which leads to a serious issue of HOW to distinguish threads one is interested in while being logged to DPR for a stretch, say an evening, etc.

Same here - in my flat view, every thread is now marked NEW, even if I already read it. I use the white dots, which work fine (they show if there are new messages in a thread; and if you click on them, they take you to first new message). "New" seems utterly pointless.

I'll use the "new" label same way I use "question" and "answered" - ignore it completely.

You have the right idea: if the NEW indicators don't serve a purpose for you, just ignore them.  For some of us, they are like an old friend who has returned.  They are an indicator of what has transpired in the hours/days since we last looked at dpreview.  For the way I work, they are a big help.  And, agreeing with your comments, I don't see how they harm anybody since they can just be ignored.
