Real higher resolution does have an impact on the image. Even in 2-D a very high resolution image gives a better impression of depth (3-D) than low or medium res images. And you could talk about colour gradients (e.g. skin tones across an arm) and the need for improvements in the breadth and desnsity of the colour palette and so on.

I don't think we're at the limit where either resolution or the colour palette no longer need improvement. I remember the jump from Kodak Gold to Velvia with its miniscule grain size and punchy colours (sometimes too punchy). In this sense more is I think, better.

Having said that, I vote for more dynamic range and continuing improvements to noise control as well as a higher pixel count and bigger colour palette. These are as important or more important to me.
