Something you should try in a cave, Carlsbad obviously isn't the place, is to take pictures with off-camera flash. I used to be a member of the NSS and the pictures in their publications are out of this world.

The lights don't appear nearly as garish to the naked eye. In fact, the place is quite incredible to view. The issue is that there are a variety of light sources of different temperatures.  I'm not quite sure why they took that approach.

Flash is allowed at Carlsbad. However, the caverns are so large that it wouldn't be effective.
