K30 purpose of the Green Button

Make sure you have enabled Aperture Ring in the menu. Select whatever aperture you want on the lens. Put the camera into M. Set the focus switch to MF (this might be what you've missed). Compose the shot. Pressing the Green Button should set shutter speed. It might not be perfect but it's usually within 1 stop; shoot, chimp and adjust if needed.
