The only thing that a small modifier will do at reasonable working distances is (maybe) reduce specularity a bit. It won't soften shadows significantly. If you don't have a wall or ceiling to bounce off of, the only real solution is to mount the flash on a light stand or pole with an umbrella or a 24x24" softbox.
