You mention Aperture or Lightroom...nothing wrong with those, but...for someone new, let me suggest you get started with Elements, version 7 or later.  There are excellent guides by Andrews or Kelby in print.

As one new to photography, you might be better off with a program that can be easily used by someone new to editing.  As your skills grow, Elements will still give you good results.  Over time as your skills and interests evolve, you will be better able to chose more advanced editing programs.
