No, it is not. Most people who mainly shoot video have concluded the A99 video is really bad. Period. There is no defense of it. Not really even in this forum.

The review linked by the op is again by people who are not comparing the video to that of any other camera or camcorder or running objective tests. The "jaw dropping" refers to slo-mo, not to overall quality even in this review. The overall statement is "The A99's video quality is quite good in many situations." Hardly a stellar endorsement, or analytical. And the example video provided is uninspiring, and soft.

The Sony VG900 full frame camera video is equally bad. See this *comparison* test:

Whether one hates camcorder video or not (which is silly) and prefers to exclusively shoot with DSLRs for video, the A99 is just about the worst choice. It is surprising, since Sony produces great video cameras (including in theit P&S line) and great still cameras.

The ignorance of some of the posters are really sad. As a top of the line, the A99 IS NOT A VIDEOCAM.

It is widely marketing as being both VIDEO and STILLS.  If not, why would Sony:

Implement full uncompressed HDMI out

Audio monitoring and level adjustment

Headphone Jack

Microphone Jack

Optional XLR Adapter

As Jeremy Clarkson of Top Gear said: How hard can it be - to understand that. If you want AF and sharp video in the same package - get a quality videocam. Anything over 6.000 will do the job.

Who said anything about autofocus?  You don't HAVE to spend $6k to get sharp video and stills.  The Sony NEX-5N takes better video than the a99, as well as many other cameras.  Including the 5D Mark II/III, Nikon D800 / D600, Canon 6D, Panasonic GH2/GH3.

With the same breath you could whine about ANY video cam not being able to produce 24Mp high quality RAW images - but you don´t.

So you DO admit there's a problem.  Still are little more than an afterthought on camcorders; always have been.

Wonder why. It is so amateur to think that one piece of equipment will do everything.

Because Sony is marketing it as such?  All we expect is video to be *as good* as the lowly $250 NEX-5n.  It isn't.

The top of the line DSLR/DSLT cameras - all of them - are used with manual focus to achieve something that a video cam cannot do, shallow depth of focus, film look if you like. That is why they are used with top of the line Zeiss, Rodenstock, Leica, Canon and Nikon glass with apertures ranging from 1.2 to 2.8. Manual focus is a creative tool for professionals, AF is for soccer moms and dads.

No one said anything about AF.  I used the A99 with a $2k 24-70 Zeiss and a $1399 Zeiss 24mm F/2 in (gasp) MANUAL focus mode and got garbage video out of it.  Autofocus isn't germane to this discussion.

Having said that, if I need a fast AF broadcast quality cam for events, sports etc. I got the Canon FX300 Atomos Ninja. All the other stuff I am doing with my the A99 - and it is great.

I also used Canon 5DmkII before (Without AF) and RED Scarlet ( no AF either). All these cameras are the choices of professionals - not beginners.

If you want AF for your kids - buy a 500 bucks handy cam and be happy - but please don't whine about something that you have so little knowledge of.

You do realize lots of us on this forum shoot more video than stills right, and collectively have years of experience shooting HD video, right?  Again with the autofocus.  Geesh.
