I would try manual mode, iso 1600-3200, 1/60 sec and f:5,6 for some more dof.
Bounce the flash off celling, even if Black, and try different flash output levels.
Did my nieces 18 birthday at a nightclub with a 550d manual and 430 exII in ettl II.
Worked resonably well.
