You know, there are plenty of messages saying we should not moan any longer, since we should just get over 3000 frames and the problems will disappear like snow in a Dutch winter. Just because someone reported that he hardly saw any spots after 3000 frames, this has become some sort of solution to an issue we like to be resolved by Nikon. However, Now it seems we need at least 6.000 frames and a report of 9.000 frames 'doens't sound very promising once you know you have excessive amounts of dirt on your sensor.
In the mean time, we are told to accept that dust and dirt without any restriction to the amount of it and cause of it, since it is a common aspect of the use of a modern DSLR. Just clean it.
If that is true, why is there no repair set in the Nikon box ? Why isn't there any warning on/in the box telling us that buying a Nikon nowadays means regular additional cleaning of your sensor because of oil and dust ? Why is there no illustration in the manual how to clean the sensor when oil is on it ? I think we all know the answer.
Usually, you can hardly see the faint oil spots below f/8. But some spots, whether oil or not, are pitch black on the test photos and you can see them even at F/4. I found out that some of them are dust and you can blow them off. But others refuse to get blown off. This doesnt imply it's not dust though. It could be dust stuck to the surface because of the oil.
I do regularly use F/8 and up all the way into f/16. In that range, I can see the stains without modifying the raw file at all. Once I add some contrast/micro contrast, the stains become really dark spots that are bound to be seen in landscape pictures, portraits and macros when taken in good light (hence apertures between F/8 and F/16). So for me, it's a real problem that doesn't go away with a rocket blower. I will not clean the sensor myself every 500 or so frames as long as Nikon doesn't officially allow me to do so given the problem is there, and Nikon has not delivered me a starters package to wet clean the sensor for at least a couple of times.
