I think Kendall fully understands the bit about of how merely disagreeing with the popular or "regular" view can be regarded as trolling.

I totally disagree with that.  Any statement can be trolling, agreeing or not.  The troll is in the effect.  Some of the more successful trolls work by drawing in regulars for support.

The practical problem is how to keep things civil without repressing dissent. The dissenter can be a troll but so can the regulars who don't like their cosy world disrupted.

It's pretty easy, have dissenters who in turn are civil.  Civil dissenters have nothing to fear.  The old "I disagree with what you say but will defend with my life your ability to say it" holds true right up until the disagreement becomes attack.  I have disagreed with a lot of things on DPReview but never been banned because of it.

That's the thing.  People are jumping all over the place like in fact the introduction of moderators to DPReview is the very thing the Myans were trying to warn us about.  Lets give it a chance and see how it works out, and if there are issues how DPReview reacts.

My opinion on moderation is that some bad and some good moderation is far better than less moderation.
