At 300mm, the Nikon 300mm f4 beats the Nikon 70-300, both in IQ and the constant aperture. I'd be surprised if any third-party 70-300 beats the Nikon prime at the 300mm end.
In general, primes allow use of TCs, which can be very useful for wildlife shooting.
