I have seen some very few cases where someone comes and is very abusive. At the top of my head, I can only recall one poster that was such a pesky person. And that person was banned ... for good. But ... he returned .. under other names. Again and again. This was some time ago. It was so long ago that they guy also pestered USENET rec.photo.digital.

There are also some other annoying persons. But no one that needs a total ban IMHO.

But ... one thing that I have seen again and again and again is regulars in a forum that gang up and attack someone that they dont like, probably because the target for their attacks dare to have non positive opinions regarding the goods that is the topic of the forum, or just comes and asks a question they know have a problematic answer.

This behaviour is very hard to moderate away. Because those regulars is the core of the forum, the important ones. Those that keeps the forum a place of knowledge. You cant really ban those without negative consequences.

Another poster hinted at you having negative experiences with abusive behaviour. Me to. But only from regulars.

So ... of course ... there are cases when a member better be banned for good. But ... (1) its rare cases ... (2) ... often its regulars ... and those are not a good idea to ban forever, if at all and (3) it is always possible to come back under another name.
