Yes, it is open to debate. This is my stance in the debate, that EVFs are on a technological trajectory to make OVFs mostly obsolete very soon, and that when that time comes, people will catch on to EVFs and start moving away from Canikon unless Canikon offers EVFs too.

Can you be specific about how EVFs are going to make OVFs obsolete? What can an EVF camera offer that a camera with an OVF and rear LCD cannot? The only area I can think of is video, and not too many people are dedicated video shooters.

Okay these are existing and potential areas of EVF superiority:

  • 100% viewfinder coverage wth high magnification (superior to consumer-level pentamirrors)
  • Correctly exposed image preview in low light.
  • Ability to see the real-time effect of changes to exposure, WB, depth of field, focus, etc.
  • Adds less bulk when integrated into the camera than OVF
  • TTL viewing for mirrorless or fixed-mirror cameras.
  • Cheaper to produce, and the gap here is getting wider with every generation.

Now you are going to say that some of these things can be accomplished by using a camera's LCD, but then you are losing the inherent advantages of using a viewfinder to begin with, plus you don't get PDAF when you use the LCD.

Obviously there are some disadvantages currently with EVFs but these are being rapidly mitigated and electronic innovation is progressing much more rapidly than mechanical innovation.
