How to control aperture of AF-D lens with D5100?

I am thinking of getting AF 50mm f/1.8D, which has got an aperture ring for my D5100. Now, how am I supposed to set the aperture? Should I set it manually using the aperture ring or should I set it in-camera? And can I change the aperture using aperture ring while recording videos?
