What I don;t understand though is that his 5Dmk II has the same AF system as my 450D and the T2i.....why not get a T2i, sell the 300mm 2.8 and get a 400 F2.8 on a crop body which makes it 640mm and then he can even use his 1.5XTC and 2XTC on it when needed and he will never have to crop again.

There you go again! lol! You really don't get it? We're not talking about Dave getting any other equipment. Dave has what he wants and he needs.

No I do get it, I'm just proposing what I would do. If you want to shoot telephoto generally speaking shooting crop is much better and cheaper. If you need to shoot wider IE landscapes shoot full frame. One tool is better than the other here and the crop will be better than his 5Dmkii at getting in really close without cropping.

His lens and sensor are both bottlenecked when he crops so tight as evident by his photos whereas he can shoot longer and he won't be bottlenecked using the right tool (a crop body and longer lens) for the job.

You don;t go to a wedding with a 10-22 lens and then crop everything to make it look like it was shot with a 50mm do you?

Here's a shot with a Canon 300 f2.8 with a 2 time tc. on a T3i.

Same bird, same place, with a 400 f2.8 and 2x tc.

Not worth the extra weight.

As for 10-22, nope. I use a Tokina 10-17 fisheye.

Who wants the same photo as everyone else.

I'd consider that worth the extra weight. The second photo is much better framed and pops more. If you need to crop so tight why not just sell the 300mm and get a 800mm or 600mm.

300mm is more of a portrait focal length I wouldn't expect it to be used for wild life photography even with a TC.
