Does sound like much difference until you have it in your hand and you're trying to focus on a critter that you've just run after for a city block and get that one shot of it looking back at you.

A friend was looking at a 400 F2.8 and let me try it for a few minutes. At 54 years old, that thing kicked my butt. It's just to much weight for me to hand hold, and even with a monopod, it's so top heavy that it becomes unstable.

Remember also, unless you have a pro body, the camera stops autofocusing at f5.6. So anything starting at f5.6 can't take a tc and have AF. (400 f5.6, 100-400 f5.6 at the long end)

Like I say, if you've never done this kind of shooting, it hard to understand.
