Matte paper became popular several years back when it was pretty much the only way to get a good print from a pigment printer.

I could be wrong, but I believe the trend is moving toward non-RC papers with more of a semi-gloss/luster-type finish, such as Canson’s Platine and Baryta Photographique papers, and those (thankfully) use the gloss black ink.  These papers (and gloss in general) seem to deliver prints with better dynamic range.

I’m sure that there will always be some that prefer matte prints, but I don’t think matte dominates as much as it previously did, thanks to better pigment ink and paper technology.

For me, at least, this means that switching to the MK ink is pretty much a non-issue.  Most of the time, people that I print for don't want matte prints, and neither do I.
