We have only just started this program and we're definitely looking into improving it further but so far this has clearly been a step into the right direction.
I'm not quite sure how you measure the success, so I would have to dispute the 'clearly...right direction'.
One measure would be are there less spam messages? Less cross posts? Less cussing, less inappropriate photos, sale or related links with poor intentions, etc.... and in general cleaner forums.
I agree, but insufficient time has passed to make such a judgement, which is why I questioned the 'clearly' part.
My major concern with your decision to recruit from the ranks of users (although understandable) is that they are bound to have their own bias yet none of the authority required for an accepted position.
Why would that be the case? There's no bias on rules that are pretty clear.
The rules are clear, but the interpretation and the application of them is always open to bias.
By that I don't mean that you haven't granted them the authority, but rather that they have no more learning, knowledge or wisdom than anyone else. Also they partake of the same discussions.
Not necessarily true as many are very tenured posters here and can easily help guide people to where they need to go or how to navigate through all that DPR offers. When applying the rules that tenure won't necessarily be needed but does help.
I realise it is not always the case, but in any other field of society where someone is expected to be in a position of authority it is generally accepted that they have attained a certain standing. Someone does not become a judge simply because 'he said so'.
If one looks at sport referees, for example, they do not have any part in the game, they have been required to learn the rules usually to a degree far in excess of the players and would never have made statements of support in any related sphere. Even then, although they carry the appropriate authority and respect, many will dispute their decisions. I cannot imagine the chaos and bad feeling that would be generated if the role of referee was handed to one of the players.
So would you prefer your congressman or law makers not live in your city or state? Many localities actually require their LEO's to live in the city in which they work. WOuld you point us to other forums that are moderated by non members? I've not ever seen any.
I'm sorry, but I haven't the foggiest idea how you arrived at this.
For my own part, I would take a dim view of such a moderator telling me that I had overstepped an accepted boundary
What is more relevant the RULE you broke or WHO informs you of it? No sure how the two are related. The fact is the illness of breaking the rule is on said member, not the mod.
What is most relevant was whether I had actually overstepped a boundary. We are back to being in a position to make a judgement and the nature of bias. If a poster feels that they were within the rules yet another tells them they have transgressed, unless there is a basis for respecting the opinion or authority of that moderator the judgement would never be accepted. It is a recipe for disaster. We accept the decisions of judges and referees because of the system laid down over many years to select them for their knowledge and authority. If you went to court and the decision rested with the 'bloke next door', I'm sure you would be more than a little alarmed!
I would feel it would be akin to another guest at a party announcing loudly that I do not hold my knife correctly (yes I know this is an extreme example, but I hope you get the general idea). It is not something I have been used to since I was a very young teenager and I don't intend to put up with it now!
So you would rather a fellow member or friend not tell you if you're pants zipper is down? Wouldn't it be easier to hear your mother tell you that you broke a rule than a complete stranger in a store?
It is one thing for any of them to nudge you gently and whisper about your embarrassment, it would be something else for them to march you in an arm-lock out of the store, telling all and sundry that your flies were undone!
Certainly, I have no dispute with DPReview running your forums however you see fit, but it needs to be DPReview enforcing the rules.
DPR is enforcing the rules. The consequences applied are ones they put in place. They are simply granting the mods the ABILTY to apply them not the POWER to create them.
Certainly they can do as they wish, which is what I have said all along. I am advising, however, that their policy is seriously flawed and without very careful monitoring will lead to unpleasantness and fewer visitors: the first is what this measure is supposed to address and the second is comletely contrary to their aims.
By all means recruit moderators, but should they be from the existing ranks of visitors, then they should no longer be able to contribute in any form or forum.
Again, please show us another forum that does this. One that is remotely similar in size and function.
I'm not sure that the onus is on me to do such. I am merely expressing my opinion of how I would prefer the moderation. I would add that I used to be a member of Dyxum, but had a pompous ass doing exactly what I fear will happen here and I certainly will never visit again.
