People who crop a lot find more megapixels beneficial. Besides the manufacturers allow for one to adjust to less megapixels in the menu. I don't mind if Nikon or Sony produce comparable cameras with higher megapixels. Canon will follow, hopefully with better image quality. I just wish they would make their telephoto lenses more affordable, like if they offered a high quality EF-S 70-400mm IS lens (as once rumored). I think the latest Canon DSLR Rebels provide better OOC JPEGs than the Nikon D3200 or D5200, which we know develops for us smaller files. I hope that the Canon T5i (700D) camera is 24mp as long as it's the same or better quality as the Canon T2i (550D) camera (with enhanced low light capability). After that, in the next few years, I think we'll see commonly something like 28, 30, and 36 megapixels DSLR cameras whether we like them or not.

From what I was reading, Olympus will produce a hybrid camera capable of using both micro and four thirds lenses by the end of 2013 (I assume without an adaptor). Their 16mp E-M5 was a success. I would imagine that the next upgrade to that camera will be 24mp.

The thing is to gain twice as much print quality considering MP's you need something like 4X MP's if I recall correctly. The jump from 12MP to 18MP only allows you to crop like 20% more on each side which is very small.....to be able to crop considerably coming from a 12MP sensor you would need a 36MP sensor which is only available on full frame at the moment. You can crop just fine with 12MP's and in my opinion more photographers should be capable of getting the shot right the first time and they won't have to worry about cropping.

I'm guessing that you've never shot wildlife. More megapixels, better chance to get that critter that's out there a bit.

I don;t shoot wild life for the most part, but wouldn't a longer lens make more sense? You're going to lose cropping no manner how many mega pixels your camera has 36MP or not due to the lens not being able to resolve the detail without being zoomed in. MP's have way surpassed the limitations of lenses and sensors.

Example: 5DMKII with 600mm worth of lens.

After the crop.

Although this was with a full frame camera, I think you get the drift.

No way to get closer, no way for me to get a larger lens. (price)

Maybe this example would be better.

Mama Griz with two cubs on a mountain goat carcass.

30D with a 400mm lens. (early on in my shooting, once again price)

After the crop.

That shot was taken shortly after she drove off a black bear with her two cubs.

Moving in closer would have been a very bad idea.

I looked at your crops at a small resolution when I clicked them (maybe 1280*1024) and the quality of these crops shows my point. The detail in the areas surrounding these animals and the detail in the animals themselves is significantly lower than what I would expect from a FF camera. They look like they were shot with a S95 when cropped as the sensor can't resolve all of that detail and more MP's does not mean that the sensor resolves more detail nor does it mean the lens will resolve more detail.

Using a longer lens even with a crop factor DSLR and cropping it to the same MP's that you end up with these FF crops will wind up with the crop factor DSLR having significantly improved image quality. I suggest that you get a longer lens.

Can you please post the full resolution cropped photos on flickr so that I can show you my point even more so? My mother in law actually thinks that she can crop because she has a really high MP camera and I've seen her cropped prints and they look terrible even with her full frame.

I don't do Flickr.

But I'll do you one further.

Here's a shot straight from camera. A 5DMKII with a 300mm f2.8 with a 2 time TC.

You tell me how far you'd crop it to print lets say a 8x12. Show me what you've got.

How many pixels do you need to make that print?
