What's the deal with prime lenses

Are all prime lenses really better than all zoom lenses? If I see a photographer using a zoom lens, does that mean that he/she is not striving for the best image possible? Really?

You are looking down your nose at a great number of talented professionals. I guess if they really cared enough, they would all trade their $2000+ zoom lenses for any $20 prime on ebay. Then they would be real photographers.
