Like others have said, you'll get used to it. I had the same concern when I was looking to upgrade to a telephoto. I was going back and forth between the 70-200 f/4 IS and the 70 -300L. I finally went to a shop and tried them both. I immediately noticed the difference with the zoom and focus rings on the 70-300L. I actually bought the 70-200 first and then returned it because I wanted the extra reach. After about 3 or 4 days of using it consistently I don't even notice the difference any more. The pictures I get with it are too good to care about the weight and reversed rings.
