The way I understand this is that you disable the focusing when pushing the shutter button, then use the AF-ON button to focus on the area where your target will be, then recompose slightly so the main focus point is away from the focused-on area, then push the shutter button and wait until your subject gets to the focused on area and that's when the camera will start taking pictures.

It looks to me you can use this for sports, say basketball, baseball, etc, where you can prefocus on the basket or the base, then just wait. Or wildlife, if you can somehow anticipate where the animal/bird will be (say a hummingbird on a feeder).
