The Oly ZD kit gave you (with the HG lenses and the 7-14 SHG) gave you the most compact system dSLR. There was no point in making tiny primes for it, because the big pro camera would still be there. There was no point (in view) making honking huge fast zooms because they make the whole kit as big as FF, which was still faster.
The MFT kit makes for a much smaller camera, so the equation changes.
I hear what you're saying, and to be honest, I tend to agree. However what this means is that for many (most?) people, the mindset behind designing and using an MFT system is very different indeed to a conventional FT one. So much so that I don't think one can really consider one an evolution of the other, rather they are two totally different systems, with only the name and one or two minor compatibilities the same.
With a pocketful of primes, you get the IQ of the old ZD system for a fraction of the weight and size. But you lose the convenience of zooming.
But many people tried to use this as the argument for using a Pentax system years ago, and they'd quickly get ousted out of this forum with the 'we don't want no stinkin primes' argument!
Well yes, but the Pentax system was still quite bulky. The MFT setup is tiny.
Let's come from the other direction - if you made an OM-D with PDAF and a (detachable) honking great grip, for which Sony and hence Oly now have the technology, you have the best of all possible worlds. Slam on grip and ZD lenses and you have a system that gives away only a bit of IQ and flexibility to FF but is far smaller. Exactly what FT always promised. Detach the grip, put your ZDs away and pocket some MFT primes, and you have a truly tiny prime based system. Everyone wins.
The only gotcha, around here, is, some people have stayed because they just don't like EVFs. Well, there's clearly personal preference involved, but I shoot in dim light, bright light, action and landscape, and I can find no way in which the OM-D EVF is unsatisfactory and several ways in which it is very clever, so while there may be some whose particular ocular physiognomy it does not suit, most just need to get with the program.
