I wont answer your easily googled question, but if you are trying to do a little macro on the cheap, the nikon 60mm f/2.8d is about $220 bucks used. Thats a bit more than a set of chipped tubes, but the results are amazing.

The thing is, I did google it; google is my best friend

The front macro filters are crap since they are usually cheap glass and reduce IQ.

The extension tubes are a hassle since they need to be changes to find correct focus distance/dof. Also no AF function with tubes...

BUT, say i am comparing all these inconveniences to a manual focus Zeiss lens... or an old MF nikon. What do i have to gain from a real macro lens? As i mentioned above the ridiculously high f-stop is the major/only functional difference i see, but with modern pixel pitch aren't f-stops above f11 overrated anyways due to diffraction?

Some of these extension tubes are made of cheap plastics that are not too strong.  I have heard of accidents where the tube broke and the whole thing including the lens dropped to the ground!
