I concur with the advice above. The camera's AF system does not work miracles in low light.

Five solutions maybe: A bigger F factor on the lens, take a few careful shots with refocusing between each one, use a spotting light on the subject (e.g. a laser pointer device but be careful of the eyes or a bright LED torch with a focused beam), use only the center focusing point or use Live View to get a better visual indication that you are focused.

Above all though, dont use A mode as the camera will focus on what it can and that is likely not to be what you want it to focus on.

And last but not least, what about the flash?
