Then the top 2 DSLR makers would not be the top 2.

Which tells us? That most users do not consider an EVF a must have.

There have been EVF type SLR cameras on the market for some time now from various makers and in particular Sony are trying to compete here. But it seems they are not having any impact on the market share not even slightly. This is also at odds with DPR's "Sony had no choice" stance, the choice is to make products people want and that are as niggle free as possible, rather than trying to convince people they should buy something they don't really want (SLT)

And yes I have an SLT camera, but I cannot say I prefer it to an OVF because I don't. It has some advantages, but some notable disadvantages too. I wish folks would stop pretending an EVF suddenly solves all problems, it solves some and adds some new ones to the mix.

I agree that the lower end DSLR's could use better viewfinders, which is one reason I give some credit to the K-30 for doing a better job here v the rather lame Canikon penta mirror offerings.

Has to be said neither Canon nor Nikon are struggling to sell their DSLR's so I have to question the logic of the OP's suggestion.

No, what it tells us is that the type of viewfinder is a low priority for most users, or that there are other variables that supersede the type of viewfinder in importance. For instance, that Canikon has been established in the market for decades and has eminently greater brand power in the digital camera industry than the other brands.

Three years ago Canikon had a virtual duopoly on interchangeable lens cameras. That's clearly no longer the case as there are several viable alternatives that offer products that are trending upward at a far greater pace than any of Canikon's products. We've literally gone from absolutely nothing to the point where EVFs are in many cases superior to OVFs. It doesn't take a fortune teller to see the direction this is going and for that reason it's clear that Canikon can't afford to sit on its population of baby boomer OVF-lovers from the film SLR days who are propping up its soon-to-be outdated technology.

What you seem to be suggesting is that canikon should wait until they have trouble selling DSLRs before they start making changes. Well by then it's going to be much too late, they need to be proactive and start ramping their R&D now if they haven't already, or else they'll get left in the dust.
