Personally, the video functionality of a DSLR is important to me because:

1. I primarily take stills but want to take decent video without carrying multiple devices

2. I want the option for image flexibility (DOF, different focal lengths) for narrative purposes

For grabbing family moments, etc. I certainly think the camcorder would be the better tool (depends on how low the light gets as well) due to stabilization, deeper focus, zooming, etc. but it doesn't meet the two criteria above and thus is a non-starter.

Your examples are certainly great illustrations though of the advantages of a dedicated device for certain uses. Thanks very much for that.

What about using a camcorder that allows you to take stills? Sony has camcorders that uses interchangeable lenses and take stills. And, all of their non interchangeable camcorders allow you to take stills.

As for flexibility of different focal lengths, even the least expensive Sony camcorder has a 25X optical zoom. That's more flexibility that any zoom lens for a DSLR.

Well every camcorder I've owned took extremely lousy stills.  Last one I had was the Canon HF-G10, which was like 2010 camcorder of the year or something.  They certainly aren't made for great picture taking.  As much as I was displeased with my a99's video performance, I would still say the a99 video is BETTER than a camcorder's stills ability.
