I used cheap filters on my old cheap tamron lens. Because my old tamron 75-300 was already not that great of the lens the macro filters did not make image much worse, but I'd hesitate sticking a $5 filter to the front of my $2400 70-200VR2... But what about extension tubes? They have no glass in them to ruin the image...
