FileFinder is a very good alternative. It scans a drive and put it all into a searchable atalogue, but more powerful is the ability to export the catalogue as small thumbnails with the original file path hierarchy (".../drivename/path/etc/filename.jpg"). This means that you get a micro-version of your drive that only takes some megabytes and since its just normal files its fully searchable by Spotlight! When you find your file, you see directly in the path what drive its located at.

If you do not want to have trillions of files on your drive, you can also create fileimages (like dng) holding the whole scanned drive (but in microversion) that you mount when needed.
