I think this is a legitimate question: "How much resolution do we need?"

I sold a D700 and purchased a D800. I like the D800, but I must admit that I will be hard pressed to see a difference in resolution in the prints I make (up to 16 X 24"), a a normal viewing distance. For monitor display, certainly no difference.

One of the reasons for my getting the D800 has nothing to do with objective picture quality. I just want to see how well my lenses hold up as far as resolution goes, particularly the old (AI converted) lenses.

I did briefly examine the resolution of the 50mm f1.4D. I was very favorably impressed.

Before d800 i had d90. Coupled with nikon trinity it produced and still produces great pictures. I bought d800 instead of other cameras for it's body, not 36MPx. I guess i could have gotten a d3 or d3s for the same price, but i did not want to take a chance on used body. Priced equally and both brand new d800 vs d3s are pretty close in my book (but have different niche applications: D3=sports, D800=studio/landscape); so resolution indeed does not equate IQ.
