Useable Service Life of Nikkor Lens VR &AF Systems?

Assume for the sake of discussion that one takes good care of their Nikkor lens (they don't get bumped, bashed around or subjected to neglect), what's a reasonable service life or length of time to expect the AF and/or VR electronics of a lens to operate properly? One would assume that eventually things wear out. Not bashing Nikkor lens; just curious about your experiences of how long they'll work under normal conditions.
