As for what a d700 offers that a d800 does not, the d700 is a high speed, high performance camera. The d800 is not.
In what way is the D800 not "high performance?"
I'm not interested in playing that game, Tony.
The D800 is an extremely high performance camera, but it's not outstandingly quick.
That would be my point. I wasn't playing a "game" with Kerry when I asked my question, I was sincerely interested to know if there was some way other than fps in which the D800 is not a "high performance" camera.
It looks like game playing to me, Tony. You are smart enough to know exactly what I meant and unlike many here, I think that you also know the value of high performance.
Kerry, you stated high speed and high performance, which implies they are not strictly the same. One way to interpret that would be looking at the AF system, and some might construe that to mean the D800 somehow doesn't measure up to the D700 in that regard. Something else that can be read into high performance would be the mirror black-out time. Another aspect of high performance would be how a camera performs in low light. Durability would be another thing that (I think) would qualify a camera as being high performance or not.
Yes, I do appreciate extra fps, better AF, and reduced mirror blackout time. In light of all of that, I would have just said the D700 enjoys 3 fps full frame advantage when using the MB-D10 (with appropriate batteries) while the D800 at 1.2x crop can match the D700's 5 fps without the MB-D10. I would add that a lot of photographers never used the MB-D10 on their D700 bodies, so for them the difference in fps between the two cameras came down to the 1.2x crop.
If you were asked by a sports shooter, which of these 2 Nikon cameras were high performance, the d4 or the d800, what would you say? Would you simply say the d4 or would you go into a long, drawn out obfuscation on both cameras?
The question was about the D700, not the D4, and you said as much in your initial reply. We could have asked the same question then about the D3 and D700 since the D3 could go to 11 fps, and in that context the D700 would not the the high speed camera, just as the D2x would now be relegated to not being a high speed camera. I would argue that any camera that can do 5 fps or faster and has an AF system that keeps up with that can reasonably be called a high speed camera, but I'm sure there will be those that disagree just as you do (and I'm fine with that).
I don't understand why this stuff has to be such a big deal all of the time. The d800 isn't the be all, end all of cameras and it certainly is not the camera that is a great fit for every photographer and genre. There certainly are other cameras that do certain things better than the d800, and it isn't a slight or bashing or any of that stuff, to state so.
That wasn't my point. I'm simply asking for some clarity here.
