I can't speak for PC's because I'm Mac throughout...

I always have a full bootable system drive backup, which means if my main OS drive dies then I can be back up and running within 5 mins, fully functional.

For Mac there is a great software called Carbon Copy Cloner which does the job.

Apart from saving grief when bad things happen, it also makes changing computers a fairly easy task.  Granted you may need to decommission a few things like Photoshop if you've got it on too many computers but that shouldn't take much time.

Not sure if there is something similar for PC's.
