I have used a Sony cable for years for handheld flash with softbox, and never had trouble with any of my Sony cameras. My cable is the FA-CC1AM with a FA-EC1AM extention cable.
I always use the hot shoe cover when the flash is not attached.
I always use "WD40" in the electronic contact of the hotshoe/flash, just put a bit into a swab.
What exactly does that do for you Nord? Make better contact? Where did you hear about that?
