I got this using just the low res JPEG and applying two Photoshop Actions I wrote. The actions would work much better on the original RAW image.

One Action converts the image to LAB Mode and on new duplicate layer applies the Shadow Highlight filter to just the Luminance channel. After the action completes adjust the top layer opacity to control the strength of the effect, mask to suit, flatten and convert back to RGB.

The second Action I got from watching guy called Calvin Hollywood on Photoshop TV who demonstrated a really amazingly effective way to bring out what he described as "freaky detail" in your image without sharpening halos. I was very impressed with the results its gives.

I have created a Photoshop action that does the "freaky Detail" enhancement. When you run the action you end up with a layer group called Freaky Detail above an untouched background layer so you can change the opacity for this group to control over all effect, it has a mask already added so you paint the effect in or out for specific areas of your image.

The actions are here for download
