I still do not move from d300s while planning it. So I tryed in shop in same conditions and with same lenses D300s against D4, D800 and D600.

Autofocus on D600 is snappier and better than on D300s, especially in a challenging indoor light conditions. All three new fullframes focuses better and have better tracking with less delays and more precisely.

But I prefer D4, because of it responsivity. D600 has substantially smaller buffer and D800 writes his buffer to average CF forever. So I collect money...

So for good light d300s is enough for reportage style shooting, but indoors D600 or D800 way better.

You loose AF area coverage but AF points smaller and more precise.
