I have both, and I don't think that it has to be an all or nothing proposition. No, the XF1 is not an X10 in a smaller package. But it isn't a cell phone camera either. It all depends on the photographic needs of your daughter. I think that the XF1 is strong on color, including white balance, flash fill balance, and DR. It is pretty good in resolution and focus and speed. For me it is significantly weaker in low light. It is amazing what 1 - 2 stops on the low end can accomplish. For me, most of the photos I take are in that low light range where having a f2.8 makes the difference between an acceptable shot, and not. So it depends on what her needs are. Of course, this does not take into account cameras like the XZ2, LX7, and the S110. FWIW, I like the looks of the XF1.
